Elrond is played by the Australian actor Hugo Weaving. Hugo was born in
Nigeria in 1960 and has lived in South Africa, England and Australia.
He is well known for his role as Mitzi the drag queen in "The Adventures
of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" for which he recieved an AFI nomination
for best actor. He recieved the AFI best actor award for his portrayal
of the blind photographer Martin in Jocelyn Moorhouse's "Proof". Hugo
is probably best known as Agent Smith, the villain in the Matrix. Oh,
and he played a talking dog in Babe. Versatile huh?
Needless to say, I was thrilled when I heard Hugo was to play Elrond.
The first picture I saw of Elrond in Empire illicited many whoops of delight.
I was so impressed with his interpretation of the part that I really can't
imagine anyone else in the role. Go Hugo!
